Colin Smith Launches Campaign for County Legislature Before Enthusiastic Crowd
Peekskill City Councilman Colin Smith announced he was running for Westchester County Legislator this morning before a crowd of supporters at the BeanRunner Cafe in Peekskill.
"I’m running for County Legislator to make sure that our local leaders have a partner in County Government who can get things done for Northern Westchester,"said Councilman Colin Smith."It's a new day in Westchester, and that new day calls for new leadership for the working families of Peekskill, Cortlandt and Yorktown. This is a critical moment for our community. We need leaders who are focused on the future and focused on results. We need leaders who will bridge the gap that has sometimes existed between this corner of the County and elected officials in White Plains. I look forward to explaining why my style of leadership and my experience is right for our community.
Smith is running in the 1st Legislative District, which includes portions of the City of Peekskill and the Towns of Cortlandt and Yorktown. A lifelong Westchester County resident and native of Peekskill, he won election to the Peekskill City Council in 2017 by 600 votes over his nearest Republican competitor. Previously, he served as a Trustee of the Peekskill Board of Education and as an Assistant District Attorney in the Bronx. He is a member of the Hudson Valley Gateway Chamber of Commerce and has volunteered with the Peekskill Youth Bureau, Hudson River Healthcare, the Rotary Club, and the Peekskill NAACP.
"I look forward to Colin’s candidacy for County Legislator. Colin has shown his commitment to public service over the past 8 years serving on both the Peekskill School Board and now the Peekskill Common Council. Colin has deep roots in Peekskill having grown up there and knows the community well. I am optimistic for him to use this experience to enhance Westchester County,"said New York State Senator Pete Harckham.
"Councilman Colin Smith is a man of his word who knows where to get help when needed. Colin keeps in touch with his constituents and always works to find the right solution to the right problem. He is deliberate, he is reflective, he is tough and he is active in his community. I’m certain he will be just as active in all the communities he will serve. I’m excited to support him in his run for County Legislator. We need unbiased people who are for all the people, as he is, to represent the people of our communities,"said Peekskill Mayor Andre Rainey.
"I support Colin Smith to be our next County Legislator for District 1. Colin has been a dedicated public servant over the past decade serving on the Peekskill School Board and then as a member of the City of Peekskill Common Council.Colin Smith knows our area well and is well versed in issues that face our communities.I look forward to working with Colin Smith as our next County Legislator,"said Cortlandt Town Supervisor Linda Puglisi.
"Colin Smith is the right choice for County Legislator. I've known him since his years working in the Bronx District Attorney's Office, and in the time since we were both elected to local office here in northern Westchester he's proven to be a bright, energetic public servant. I'm looking forward to working with him on the issues that matter to our community,"said Yorktown Town Supervisor Ilan Gilbert.
"Colin Smith's practical experience on the school board, in his law practice, and on the Common Council together with his deep roots in our community and his vision for the future will be a welcome change in this County Legislator seat. Now is the time to elect someone who is willing to find creative solutions while respecting the unique needs of our region and Colin is without question the person to do just that,"said Maria Slippen, Cortlandt Democratic Committee Chair.
